What a difference

Three years ago tonight we were surrounded by our family and friends at our rehearsal dinner. Toasting, laughing, giddy about our wedding the next day. Tonight I sat there while my baby projectile vomited 9 ounces of formula INTO my shirt. The v-neck was an unfortunate choice. Oh what a difference 3 years makes.

Sloane is fine and it's a good thing she's so cute. I was a little bitter she was smiling so much after we both got showered and changed.

Growing up too fast

Sloane took her big girl carseat for a test drive before we installed it in the car.

2 Teeth

Sloane's second tooth popped in shortly after her first. We've been trying to get a photo but our girl did not want to cooperate. The minute she realized you wanted a look at her teeth she would clamp her mouth shut. Finally, this weekend, she realized it was about time to show those suckers off.

Poking and prying will get you nowhere.

Weekend Update

We had a wonderful long weekend...a little bit lazy, a little bit busy, some project finished, time with family and friends, but too few pictures were taken. Friday night we had margaritas and fajitas with the Knights, the Tolzmanns, and the Adam Poorts.
Saturday Sloane and I met up with Andrea for a walk and some shopping then we snuggled in for pizza and a movie at home. Sunday we took advantage of the sunshine and went for a long family walk and some coffee then John did some projects outside. That afternoon we headed over to Sandy and Leo's to drop off the girl so John and I could have a date night. Papa and Grandma took Sloane for a walk and she even got to enjoy some time on the swings.

On monday (a holiday for me) Sloane and I scored some deals at the outlet mall with Nicki and then on Tuesday (another holiday for me woo-hoo!) we spent some quality time with Mimi. It was a wonderful four day weekend but now its back to the grind.

Heard recently

This conversation took place in our living room while watching a certain teen heartthrob perform on the Grammy’s.

John: “You’ve gotta give it up for someone who was writing their own songs at the age of 8.”
Me, trying my best not to burst into hysterical laughter: “So, you’re a big fan of the Biebs?”
John, with a totally straight face: “I respect him.”

I didn’t know I was married to a teenage girl and I'm hoping that Never Say Never won't be the movie of choice for our date night this weekend.

You are a lot of things, John, but boring isn’t one of them.

8 months

8 is great.
January2011g 219-1

Our little buttercup is still a rock star and our 8th month contained a lot of firsts. Mama went away for the first time to a conference in Chicago for four days. I missed my baby and her daddy like crazy but they were somehow able to survive without me :) And what a great welcome home present - Sloane's first tooth! Later that weekend my grandma Virginia came up from Texas. It was great to have her visit and for Sloane to spend time with her great grandma! We tried some new foods, including ice cream. Sloane couldn't get enough of it. Our girl is a smiling and giggling fool. We can, and do, spend hours doing anything silly to make her laugh. The silly dances, funny faces, weird voices...I have no shame when it comes to entertaining Sloane and neither does John.

There were some other firsts, but they aren't quite as joyous. For the first time (at least the first time to my knowledge), I almost killed Sloane. Maybe that's a bit dramatic but in an attempt to sooth my crying baby I pulled a stuffed animal out of her toy chest for her to play with. It was dark and I didn't see the cardboard tag that was still attached. The good news is that a#1. Sloane's "I'm choking" cough is much different from her regular cough, b#2. I know that I can effectively execute the "swipe and clear" so often talked about in baby classes, and c#3. never again will a toy enter Sloane's room with a tag on. On a lighter note, Sloane got me back just a few days later when I held her little naked body for a little to long while adjusting the temp of her bath water and she promptly peed all over me and the kitchen floor. We were late to the party that night and now the diaper stays on until its time to get into the bath. And a week later she puked all over me. It's amazing something so gross can come out of someone so cute.

Each day is a new adventure and we are so truly, madly, deeply in love with our girl.

I heart you

When it comes to Valentine’s day, I’m torn. I'm sometimes quick to label it a Hallmark holiday. On the other hand I can't help but embrace any day that celebrates love and appreciating those that make your world go round. I smooched my hubby goodbye yesterday morning and as I was heading out the door I heard, “Wait – I made you a latte.” Score! He does this occasionally, so it was a nice treat but not a total shocker. Then I saw the cup and the message he had written. Yes, I love Valentine’s day.

Dinner with the Schmits

We had a wonderful dinner with Karen, Bryan, Dylan and Taylor on Sunday. John cooked an amazing meal and we had a fun time catching up with the Schmits. Dylan is a riot and Taylor is such a cutie. Karen and I are so excited for our girls to be buddies :)

Brunch with Cam Cam

We were long overdue for a playdate with the Campbell's so we made a date for brunch. It was great to catch up and swap parenting stories with Graham and Susie and so fun to snuggle Cameron. She and Sloane are only 3 weeks apart but it doesn't seem like it when you see our gentle giant and their peanut together. Adam and Owen joined us too for waffle bar. Yum!

Cameron is the smiliest baby I have ever seen - too cute!

We're back

The Angry Pirates are back for round 2 of bowling. Another 6 straight Wednesday nights of good old fashioned fun...with some pitchers of bud light and shots of whiskey thrown in. While our bowling scores have been more than a bit lacking (we are currently in last place) we continue to dominate the Claw machine. You should see the pile of stuffed animals in our playroom. All cheap and made in China. Some are cute and some are not. Our nieces and nephews love these random gifts – I’m not sure they’re parents are as thrilled.

Oh – and I learned last week that I’ve been bowling wrong. For my entire life. Turns out your are supposed to hold the ball with your thumb, middle, and ring fingers when bowling, not your thumb, index and middle fingers. You’d think I would be embarrassed to admit that but I 100% blame Pat and Deb. Shouldn’t they have caught that during our family bowling outings growing up? It borders on neglectful in my book. My score has only slightly improved since I made the switch.

Cousins

Sloane loves her cousins and they love her. She and Owen are especially smitten with each other – it is hilarious to watch these two. At dinner last week Lucy announced that she thinks Owen and Sloane should get married. Yeah…probably not.

We all scream for ice cream. Sloane got her first taste of the good stuff and she loved it. She is definitely John’s daughter (not that there was any question about that).

Visit from Virginia

My grandma traveled up from Texas at the end of January to spend a few days with our family and snuggle all of the babies. It was wonderful to see sassy Virginia and for Sloane to get to meet her great grandma but we missed my grandpa who was holding down the fort back in Texas. We love you guys!

Check out these chompers

At the end of January (7 ½ months), Sloane got her first tooth! She had a couple of rough nights while I was in Chicago and I was chalking it up to missing her mama but apparently John had just gotten his first taste of teething. She's not to keen on showing off her pearly whites - it took a lot of work to get this photo. Yeah teeth!
